According to Jon Hoch, founder of Electric Generators Direct, customers now have two choices in ordering a generator: (1) Factory Direct or (2) Same-Day Shipment. Factory Direct In 2002, Electric Generators Direct.com debuted as an online generator superstore with factory-direct prices. Customers ordered from a large selection of generators that shipped directly from the manufacturers factory to their door.
The factory-direct concept eliminated the need for warehouses and retail stores. As a result, the company passed the saving onto the customer as direct discounts. Factory direct is ideal for customers who have the luxury of waiting for their generators, said Hoch. Unfortunately, it has two drawbacks product availability and speed. It only takes a single natural disaster like a hurricane or ice storm - to wipe out a manufacturers entire inventory. Generator manufacturers ran out of inventory in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
If youre lucky enough to order an in-stock generator, it could take days for the manufacturer to manage through the backlog and finally get your generator out the door. Same-Day Shipment During a disaster, customers simply cannot afford to wait for their generator, and theyre willing to pay a premium to get their order on the road as quickly as possible. Electric Generators Direct is launching Same-Day Shipment to accommodate customers on a tight deadline. For a small service charge, Electric Generators Direct will guarantee that in-stock generators will ship the same day if ordered before Noon CST Monday thru Friday. Weekend and afternoon orders will be shipped the next business day.
Hoch equates Same-Day Shipment as a speed pass to the front of the line. Its just like waiting in line for a roller coaster. You can wait your turn or pay a little extra to get on board immediately. The service charge varies depending on the size of the generator: " Less than 3,000 Watts: $50.00 " 3,000 5,999 Watts: $75.00 " 6,000 9,999 Watts: $100.00 " 10,000 Watts and More: $150.00 Why the extra charge? Electric Generators Direct modified its business model to accommodate the new service. The company is now stocking a limited supply of its best selling generators in its new 3,000-square foot warehouse. "The service charge covers our expense to warehouse, fullfill and ship these orders." Not Next Day Service All Same-Day Shipment orders will be shipped immediately from Electric Generators Directs limited inventory via semi trucks. Generators cannot be shipped in an airplane because they contain small traces of gasoline. According to Hoch, Same-Day Shipment significantly speeds up delivery times. Under the Factory Direct model, customers can typically expect delivery within 10-14 business days (if the model is in-stock). With Same-Day Shipment service, customers can receive their generator as quickly as 2-3 business days.
By shaving a few days off the delivery time, 'Same-Day Shipment' orders can often arrive before the next Category 5 Hurricane makes landfall, said Hoch. Electric Generators Direct will provide customers with a tracking number so they can track the status of their order in real time. Roads may be closed or inaccessible during a disaster. Therefore, the company cannot guarantee an exact delivery date for each order. Electric Generators Direct will continue to offer the Factory Direct service.
